Aramis Alvarez Memorial 5K

Fayetteville, GA

NEW!  We are now a USATF certified course and Atlanta Track Club Official Peachtree Road Race Qualifier!

The Why of This Event
North Fayette UMC has been holding an officially timed Georgia Grand Prix race for 13 years.  Last year we renamed the event The Aramis Alvarez Memorial 5K. We want to share with you the reason for the change by telling you about the man Aramis was and his legacy, which we want to help continue.

You see, there is this Methodist thing about love.  We believe that if we are disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to be imitators of Him.  We are to have the same heart and mind.  We believe; therefore, that our goal in this life is to strive to become perfect in love.  That is a tall order, but it is what Christ told His disciples they should be known by: love.

Whether or not we are successful or make mistakes, we strive to do everything because of our love of God and others.

We believe that loving others as ourselves is the best way to show and grow in our love of God. When you meet someone that is walking this road toward perfection in love, you know it.  They are different because of the way they embrace others. You can feel it.  That is who Aramis Alvarez was and what his legacy is.

Aramis put his love into action at home, at work, at church, and in Honduras among people in need including an indigenous mountain tribe called the Toulapans. His partner in this work was, and continues to be, his wife, Alicia. Their dedication to children, youth and the disabled of Honduras led to their adoption of two wonderful Honduran teenagers.  Aramis died in a tragic accident in December 2017, leaving us all with a hole in our heart. An excerpt from his obituary reads,

“Throughout his life, Aramis’ hands were never idle, his mind was unceasingly creative, and his heart was always full. His energy, drive, and compassion touched the lives of thousands of people all around the world. Family, friends, and the church were just the beginning. His life of service was often directed to people he didn’t know and whose gratitude he never expected. He leaves behind a legacy of beauty and love that is multiplied by the many whom he inspired to follow his example.”

And so, we want a portion of our proceeds from this event to support Sharing Hearts. A foundation established by Aramis and Alicia, Sharing Hearts works through American and Honduran nonprofit organizations to provide funding, expertise, and resources that improve the lives of disadvantaged people in Honduras. Assistance is provided in the form of food, supplies, wheelchairs and other equipment for those with disabilities, as well as through educational opportunities, love, and mentoring. The goal is to create a way where none existed for better lives; to be the hands and heart of Christ to our brothers and sisters in Honduras.

With your help, our financial support will grow every year!
